Rookies in the World Series

Rookies are well-represented in this year’s World Series.  Here’s a list of them.

For Boston:

  • Dustin Pedroia
  • Jacoby Ellsbury
  • Daisuke Matsuzaka
  • Hideki Okajima

For Colorado:

  • Troy Tulowitzki
  • Ubaldo Jimenez
  • Franklin Morales
  • Ryan Speier
  • Chris Iannetta
  • Seth Smith
  • Jeff Baker

Combined, these players have played a total of 716 games in the majors.

Alex Rodriguez, by the way, has played in 1904 career major league games, and has yet to reach the World Series.

  1. Thanks for the list! And yes, poor A-Rod… Only not really.

    Here’s a World Series survey – http://is-nri.com/take/?i=121297&h=l6MSznzXwAh74fYQzr414Q

  2. None of these rooks come even close to my first year.

  3. though that may be true, freddie, some of these rooks will be wearing WS rings. something you sadly never did. Too bad, cuz you were a postseason monster — 22 of 54 for a .407 average, with a pair of homers and 12 RBI’s. Too bad you didn’t get a chance to play in more of em.

  4. so, the sox only have two real rookies, right? As in youngsters….are any of the Rockies transplanted proffesionals?

  6. I belive the proper quote is:

    “I like you Clarence,
    I always have,
    always will.”

  7. A Rookie is anyone that has not played in MLB. Sorry but that means Dice and Oki are rookies.

Not to mention this is only Youk’s 2nd full year

  8. “A Rookie is anyone that has not played in MLB.”

without a doubt. I’m not questioning the legitimacy of their being MLB rookies.

Point to be made is that Okajima and Matsuzaka are established veterans in the field of professional baseball.

look at the age discrepancies between the players mentioned:

    Sox;

    Okajima; 32
    Matsuzaka; 27
    Pedroia; 24
Ellsbury; 24 (born on 9/11 no less, that evil man)

    average age= 26.8

    Rockies;

    Speier; 28
    Baker; 26
    Smith; 25
    Iannetta; 24
    Tulowitzki; 23
    Jiminez; 23
    Morales; 21

    average age= 24.3

I still remember the discussions, some brought forth by ESPN, about how sasaki and suzuki shouldn’t have been considered for the rookie of the year award due to their pro baseball experience. But you don’t hear those stories about Boston players now, do you?

Truth is, I’d love to see Pedroia win that award this year, not just because he is a classy, hard working player, but also because he is a true rook.

  9. I used the standard of what defines a rookie as provided by mlb.com:

    Determining rookie status:
A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).

I don’t give a damn if Dice-K and Okajima played in the Japanese league or not. Different league, different game, they’re rookies.

Besides, not all Japanese players come over and have an instant impact. Mac Suzuki anyone?

  10. And Freddy, Troy T had a very comparable rookie season to yours while playing a tougher defensive position.

    Comment by trueslicky | October 24, 2007

  11. Freddy’s problem was that he only had one year better than his rookie year. Oh, and he played about 115 games every season.

  12. I’m so divided on this WS. I really don’t like the Red Sox, especially Manny. Especially when he’s just being Manny. And I’m no fan of Schilling.

I’m as ambivalent as most about the Rockies, but I would generally root for the team of young, unheralded upstarts. But I really hate sanctimonious prostelitizing too.

I think I’m for the Rox.
