The Mariners’ next generation
MiLB.com has been profiling the farm systems of various franchises over the off season, and has just posted its analysis of the Mariners’ up-and-coming youngsters. According to minorleaguebaseball.com, the Top 10 Mariner stars of the future are:
Phillip Aumont, a 6′7” RHP with mid-to-high 90s speed who has yet to toss a pitch in the organization.
Nick Hill, a LHP who compiled a 0.51 ERA in 35 innings with the Everett AquaSox in 2007.
Matt Tuiasosopo, brother of Marques, the M’s convinced the future Huskie QB to trade the pigskin for baseball, the third baseman hit .260 with a .371 ob-base percentage with West Tennessee last year.
Greg Halman, an OF who after being promoted to Everett last year, hit .307 and slugged .597 with 16 home runs in 238 at-bats.
Adam Moore, the 24-year old catcher hit .307 with a .913 OPS over a full season with the High Desert mavericks.
Yung-Chi Chen, an IF who has racked up a .306 average over 1,200 minor league at-bats, Chen hit .339 in 59 at-bats for the Peoria Javelins in the Arizona Fall League.
Carlos Triunfel, just 18, this SS who is a bit of a defensive work-in-progress hit .296 over three levels in the minors last season, showing raw skills that could develop into a fixture in the M’s infield in a handful of years, if not sooner.
Juan Ramirez, the 19 year-old RHP struck out 73 batters in 75 innings last year with the AquaSox.
Michael Saunders, OF who hit .298 with an .860 OPS over two minor league stops last season, including 108 games for the High Desert Mavericks.
Bryan LaHair, Tacoma’s first baseman, and potential heir to Richie Sexson, exhibited good line-drive hitting ability last year. How soon until those 46 minor league doubles become home runs on the major league level?
Also keep an eye on: Alex Liddi, 3B, an Italian import with 39 extra-base hits in 400 at-bats with Wisconsin last year; Justin Thomas, who despite a 4-9 record and 5.51 ERA, the left-hander made 24 starts and compiled 119 innings.
There you have it, folks. The Mariners’ Generation Next.
