Bad Fanmanship

Is it just me, or are the Tampa Bay (Devil) Ray fans really bad?

For one, it’s surprising to see so many at a game…

Sure, it’s their home opener, the team is loaded with young talent, and there is a new, state of the art stadium on the way…

But it’s still the Rays. When have they ever had a decent fan base?

I don’t want this post to be taken as a diatribe against the Rays, their fans, or anything associated with their organization.

I like the Rays, and I really do like their chances of finishing as a better team than the New York Yankees this season.

Yet, tonight I guess I saw what may just possibly be a bad representation of the population of the greater Tampa/St. Pete area.

It wasn’t just the full blown shot of the fan giving a standing, double bird salute before commercials that was ugly, even more unappealing was the chours of boos that resonated between plays, and cheers, for the next couple innings…to this point still in fact.

Yes, it was a close play at third. Yes, BJ Upton kicks serious ass, and proved how much of a baller he was by sliding in ahead of the throw at third while running with one shoe out of the batters box. But, after multiple replays, there was no conclusive proof that Beltre DIDN’T block that play with his leg.  Completely legal. Completely pimp.

Wendlestadt was right on top of the play. He made a great call.

M’s just won. Good show from the bullpen tonight. Corcoran will have to stay once JJ is back. Who leaves?

Grow up TB fans, you got a fun team to root for.

  2. Was that even English? Wow.
Anyway, I would tend to agree – but I wasn’t even sure whether or not that out was legit, even after watching the replays. It was hard to tell, for sure.
The thing is, would it have changed the outcome of the game even if Upton was declared safe? With Corcoran’s and Rowland-Smith’s performance, I don’t think so. It was just an incredible play by Upton, very impressive.
As for the fans, well, I’m guessing it was even more difficult to tell from the seats, if it was hard to tell on HD. They had every right to boo; the finger thing was uncalled for, but whatever. Has the coach yelling at an umpire ever NOT resulted in the coach getting booted out of the game? It makes for good drama, but I’ve never seen it reverse a decision. Oh well.

And O NOE, Cobain hasn’t been relevant in Seattle since 1994. Maybe when you learn that typing and texting are two different things (or graduate from grade school), you can make yourself understood on the internet.

  3. I agree with your assessment that the fanmanship is a little poor but as a fan of this organization (Rays) for ten years I have sat by and watched them waste the payroll that they have spent every year. And this team has not only failed to play up to their expectations but have been “unlucky” with some of their umpiring done game-in game-out.

And for this team to not live up to their hype, that is acceptable but for them to be jipped, almost cheated day in day out is unacceptable.

The fan that gave the middle finger was good in showing that their is some passion but was unnecessary and uncalled for but almost warranted at the time being.

And to believe that the BJ Upton play would not have changed the game would be like claiming that the Bill Buckner muffed ground ball was foul. Just not right. If called safe, there would be runners on both 1st and 3rd with only one out. Down a run, with the leading runner (Upton) on third is a scoring situation if I have ever seen one. I mean he had already stolen home before so he is a serious threat to score.

The game was a great game but for the Rays to lose in that manner is unbelievable.

  4. We’re not all obnoxious fans here in the Tampa Bay area. We do have our fair share of folks that migrate down here from the NE, so that type of boorish activity is more common than most of us would like to see.
Regarding that call at 3rd, you’d have to be absolutely BLIND to say it was anything but a horrible call. I believe some of the outbusts you heard are spilling over from some of the bad calls that went against us in NY over the weekend.

and what exactly have the mariners EVER done??? LOL
Ohh yeah, they were the launching pad for A-Roid, the Big Unit and Junior! LOL

Funny how there’s not much of a crowd when the Mariners come to town … about the same as games against other nobodies like KC and Texas!

  6. Who has the moder-era record for victories in a season, with 116? Oh right, Tampa Bay. I forgot.

Granted, neither Tampa Bay nor Seattle has a World Series crown. Seattle fans will just have to settle for their division titles, soon-to-be representation in the Hall of Fame (and Wade Boggs doesn’t count), having the greatest pure hitter ever play his entire career for the Mariners, and being the prominent setting for Ball Four.

It’s hard to compare to the rich cultural history of Tampa Bay, but we’ll try.

  7. Right, 54 home sellouts in one season. I’d find it hard to believe “The Trop” has seen that many sellouts in the Rays history.

I’ve always been quite fond of the team in a way to tell the truth. A perrenial loser playing in a big, ugly dome. Ahh, reminds me of the Mariner teams of my youth.

Seattle didn’t put together their first winning season until the 15th of their history, so TB still has a shot to best them in that regard. As they should, seeing as how there is a lot more talent spread throughout the league than there was in the 80’s.

  8. Be easy on Rays fan. They just had their ninth sell-out in their ten year history….
